Age-related macular degeneration

Protecting Your Central Vision

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. It’s one of the leading causes of vision loss in people over 50.

At Vision Care Associates in Shawnee, KS, we help patients detect and manage AMD early, so they can maintain their independence and quality of life for as long as possible.

Types of AMD:

  • Dry AMD: The most common form, caused by thinning of the macula over time. It tends to progress slowly.

  • Wet AMD: Less common but more serious. It involves abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina, which can leak and lead to rapid vision loss.

Common Symptoms:

  • Blurry or distorted central vision

  • Difficulty reading or recognizing faces

  • A dark or empty area in the center of your vision

If you notice these changes, schedule an eye exam right away.

Diagnosis and Monitoring

During your comprehensive eye exam, we use advanced tools like retinal imaging and OCT (optical coherence tomography) to detect early signs of AMD—even before symptoms begin.

Can AMD Be Treated?

While there’s no cure, we offer ways to slow its progress:

  • Nutritional supplements (AREDS2) for dry AMD

  • Prescription injections for wet AMD

  • Lifestyle recommendations to protect your eyes

Stay Ahead of Vision Loss

Early detection is the best defense against AMD. If you're over 50 or have a family history of macular degeneration, regular eye exams are essential.
